Short Courses

We offer a variety of training courses oriented specifically to professional forensic science communities and organizations (e.g., law enforcement, criminalists, medicolegal investigators, forensic pathologists, attorneys) or college courses. These training courses can take place on-site utilizing our classroom, skeletal materials and the Anthropology Research Facility or, depending upon the topic, be provided at an off-site location. These courses do have a fee that will be arranged based on the curriculum and the number of participants.

Forensic Anthropology Field Methods

Cost: $600

This is an intensive course designed to enhance one’s knowledge in forensic recovery techniques. Various mapping techniques and equipment will be discussed and applied to an outdoor context. Participants will be responsible for the recovery of scattered and buried human remains at the Anthropology Research Facility.

This course is best suited for undergraduate and graduate students in biological and forensic anthropology who have experience with osteology.

Outdoor Recovery Course

Cost: $1000

This 4-day course is designed for medicolegal personnel that are actively involved in the recovery of human remains. Participants will be introduced to the role of the forensic anthropologist in a forensic investigation and how they can assist in the recovery of remains in an outdoor context. Topics covered include the basics of time since death determination and an introduction to new techniques available to law enforcement. The archaeological approach to surface and burial recovery and the use of current technology available to aid in the recovery of human remains at the Anthropology Research Facility will be emphasized. The fee covers course equipment and materials and all required PPE.

Prerequisites: Participants must be gainfully employed in the medicolegal community. Medical Examiners, death investigators, law enforcement or other related fields will be considered.

Contact Center Director Giovanna Vidoli for more information on short courses.
